Ohio is a part of the Utica Shale, with most activity in the state being in Columbiana and Carroll counties. The Utica Shale underlies much of the northeastern United States and adjacent parts of Canada. Recently, Ohio has become a major producer in the natural gas and oil world due in major part to the Utica Shale in the eastern part of the state, making it a prime area to buy mineral rights and oil and natural gas royalties in.
Taking its name from the city of Utica, New York, Utica Shale production began in 2011 in Ohio. This was when drilling and permits for drilling began to reach record highs. Although the Utica extends into Pennsylvania and West Virginia, primary activity has recently been in Ohio, due to the fact that the Ohio region is believed to be much richer in condensate, oil and natural gas. Because of this, CP Royalties purchases many oil and natural gas royalties and mineral rights in Ohio.
