Natural gas was first discovered in Kansas in Seward County’s Houghton embayment in 1922. It was initially abandoned because of a lack of oil, but was later discovered to contain natural gas. As years went on, more natural gas, oil and minerals were found and continue to be produced to this day.
Mississippian Lime and The Niobrara Formations
The Niobrara Formation produces both gas and oil in the western portion of Kansas, with multiple production opportunities. Mississippian Lime runs almost bisects the state, covering a large percentage of Southern Kansas. This is considered a carbonate formation that primarily produces oil.
